Filipino Culture in Films
There are a lot of films in the Philippines that showcase the Filipino Culture. Some movies are all about who we are as Filipinos Most of us Filipinos are very religious and believe in superstitious beliefs. The popular movie here in the Philippines is 'Himala" starring Nora Aunor as the lead actor. The movie was about a girl named Elsa, a barrio girl develops healing powers by gazing at the lunar eclipse and she encountered Blessed Mother Apparition. Due to her healing powers, the neighbors found out about it and started coming up to her and asked for curse and her healing powers. The news about it started spreading quickly. In the provinces here in the Philippines, there are a lot of "alboraryo" who can heal the sick. They said you have to believe to the power of the alboraryo so that you will be really healed from sickness. As what I said, most of the Filipinos believe in superstitious beliefs. They ask for help to the "alboraryo" to heal them if the doctor couldn't help them.
One movie titled "Corazon ang Unang Aswang" is about a young married couple who have been wanting to have a child but having a hard time to conceive a child. They were really desperate to have a child so they decided to ask for help to a local shaman. The shaman told them to do some rituals and prayers. After some weeks, their prayers have been finally answered, but unfortunately when the baby was born , it was already dead. Corazon couldn't accept the fact that her baby died because she went through a hard time bearing a child. Starting from that day, Corazon cursed God and said that she wont let anyone in their village to have a child because she will eat them. Filipinos believe that there is such thing as 'aswang' in the Philippines especially in the provinces, They are believed to eat babies. The people from the provinces do some rituals to keep the aswang away. Some Filipinos ask help to a shaman to answer their prayers. In fact, there are a lot of news about the aswang here. This movie got their idea based on the culture of the Filipino.
Filipino Films are good when it comes to comedy and romance. Love story will always be included even when it's horror. There is something good about Filipino Films because it shows the moral values and lessons from the film. For example, it is part of our culture to give respect to the elders by doing "mano". In some films, it is shown how it is shown how it is important to give respect to the elders by doing "mano" and saying "po"and "opo".
